The 10 year old gets a life sentence of trauma and this self-excusing a-hole gets 5 years. He will do it again...they can’t stop themselves...sex offenders have the highest recidivism rate of criminals. As to the excuses, I call BS. Lots of abuse victims do not turn around and abuse others.

Judges can't impose any sentence they choose. They're guided by the limits outlined in the Criminal Code and by precedents. Specifically, the Supreme Court of Canada has directed that judges can only reject joint recommendations on sentence if the recommended term is so wildly outside the established range for such crimes that it would bring the administration of justice into disrepute. Judge Mathurin's review of the case law led her to believe that it did fall within the established range, so she was bound by precedent to accept it.

The DNA order is a mandatory order for those convicted of sex-related offences and other crimes.
Judges need to stop being lenient with things like these - It should be a lot more long of a sentence
