Beth Wallace, who was shot and almost killed 10 years ago, says corrections officials prohibited her from revealing attacker was out of prison or warning others of risk
Excellent in-depth reporting, Don. Lots of angles and background to help make this sad story more complete. Readers can make up their own minds on the actions of the offender's family, but it's good to have the whole story.
And good on you for shining a very bright light on the foolish excuses of the CSC in warning the victim not to tell ANYONE that the offender was being released. That's ridiculous, and I'm glad you proved them wrong!
Great reporting Don. Investigative and in depth. Karissa Donkin at CBC is doing an investigative piece also on the misconduct of law enforcement. That will be a very interesting read. The system makes rules up as they go in some cases. Beth should have been able to warn anyone she felt needed to know to protect herself. She is correct, he didn’t follow the rules inside and he certainly won’t follow them outside either. I would agree with that assumption.
Excellent Article. I particularly like how you digged further and reached the offenders mother, and she denied posting any comment, denied it all - going by a pseudonym, which is fine to do, but once caught, then blaming it on someone else in her family haaa! The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
It’s tough to watch pieces of your life written about, judged and discussed publicly. 10 years of practice and it’s not any easier; but, I know that highlighting areas that are broken, unjust, unreasonable and ineffective is necessary for change to happen. Thank you Don for providing a forum to create awareness of injustices and unnecessary pain. I am just one victim pushing back against the systems; but, I feel compelled to keep advocating for changes for the benefit of all victims of criminal delinquents.

Thank-you for explicitly stating that privacy legislation does not bind individuals, only public bodies! This point is so widely misunderstood.
I have previously commented on the quality and depth of the Independent's reporting, but it bears repeating!

The whole clan is crazy wanting him to be able to visit Fredericton
