I appreciate the amount of detail you put in your stories. This is what real journalism should look like.

Thanks for the positive feedback. I've opted in the early days of the Fredericton Independent to go into greater depth, but I don't begrudge the shorter pieces you see in other media outlets. More succinct stories are driven by a number of factors - space/time constraints, studies that readers of news tend to tune out after a few paragraphs - and it's an entirely valid approach to journalism. It's one of the reasons reporters strive to put the most important nuggets of information at the top of a story.

But an online publication isn't subject to the same limits or pressures, so I've chosen to put more information than usual in my pieces. I try to anticipate questions that may arise in the mind of a layperson who isn't as familiar with the courts. Time will tell if people are receptive to this approach overall and on an ongoing basis, or if they just want to get to the nitty gritty. I may adapt as I go. The site will undoubtedly evolve as circumstances demand and permit.

Ultimately, I don't feel my greater level of detail is better than what other journalistic outlets are offering, merely different. I consider my work just a piece in the larger patchwork that forms the overall news picture in New Brunswick.
