City cop gets discharge for assault on ex
Judge rules that sparing Fredericton police Const. Colin Holmes, 25, criminal record for intimate-partner violence wasn’t contrary to public interest due to many mitigating factors
A Fredericton police officer won’t have a criminal record for entering his former girlfriend’s home unlawfully and assaulting her last fall.
Const. Colin Holmes, 25, appeared in Fredericton provincial court Thursday to hear Judge Brian McLean’s decision on sentence in his case.
The Fredericton Police Force officer pleaded guilty earlier this year to summary charges of assault and unlawful entry into a dwelling, both stemming from an incident in Hanwell on Sept. 24.
Court heard previously that Holmes had been dating Deidra Wheeler and living with her at her Hanwell home until the couple broke up in August.
Holmes started dating another woman, but when he became concerned Wheeler might contact his new partner, he went to her home to speak with her.
Wheeler didn’t want him there because her two young children were present, but despite being denied entry, he gained access to the interior of her home through a side door.
A scuffle broke out, during which Wheeler sustained scratches and bruising.
