A Fredericton police officer asked a court to grant a conditional discharge Tuesday and spare him a criminal record for intimate-partner violence, so he might possibly be able to keep his job.

Colin Holmes, 25, a constable with the Fredericton Police Force, pleaded guilty in February to summary counts of assault and unlawful entry into a dwelling house, and he was back in Fredericton provincial court Tuesday for his sentencing hearing.

Crown prosecutor Fréderique Bossé said the charges arose after an incident in Hanwell the afternoon of Sept. 24.

She said Holmes and the victim - Deidra Wheeler - had been in a relationship for about a year and the officer had even moved into her home, but the relationship ended in August 2023.
