Domestic abuser seeks sentencing circle
Winton Labelle Walter Saulis, 36, convicted earlier this fall of brutalizing girlfriend in 2021
A man who pummeled and sliced a Bilijk (Kingsclear) First Nation woman in her home three years ago wants to appeal his convictions and to be sentenced through an Indigenous process.
Judge Scott Brittain convicted Winton Labelle Walter Saulis, 36, of no fixed address, on Sept. 27 of Dec. 18, 2021, counts of assaulting Chanel Sabattis with a knife, unlawfully entering her Bilijk First Nation home, unlawfully confining her, and uttering a threat to cause death or bodily harm to her father.
Saulis was back before Brittain in Fredericton provincial court in person and in custody Monday, scheduled to go through a sentencing hearing.
However, the judge said due to an administrative error, that wasn’t feasible.
