Testimony from a victim of intimate-partner violence was backed up with hard evidence, a judge said in convicting a former Bilijk (Kingsclear) First Nation man of several crimes while also rejecting his evidence.

Winton Labelle Walter Saulis, 36, of no fixed address, appeared in Fredericton provincial court Friday to hear Judge Scott Brittain’s decision on his trial on charges stemming from allegations of domestic violence.

Saulis stood accused of assaulting Chanel Sabattis between Dec. 1 and 8, 2021; and assaulting her with a knife Dec. 18, 2021.

The latter incident also gave rise to related charges of unlawful entry into the victim’s home on the Bilijk First Nation, unlawful confinement and uttering a threat to cause death or bodily harm to her father.
