Fredericton firm fined for worker injury
Court hears carpenter stepped into unguarded stairwell last year while working for Jace Construction, sustaining bruised back and lungs; worker is back on job with same company
A failure to put guardrails up around an open stairwell in a townhouse under construction last summer caused a carpenter to fall and get injured, a court heard Tuesday.
Jonathan Newmann, owner of Jace Construction, appeared in Fredericton provincial court, accompanied by defence lawyer Dawson Harrison, for the company’s sentencing on a charge under the provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act.
The business had previously pleaded guilty to a count laid by WorkSafe New Brunswick alleging it failed to ensure that an opening leading to a stairway was protected by guardrails on all exposed sides, except for the side leading to the stairway entrance.
