A fire that caused extensive damage to the gazebo in Wilmot Park in downtown Fredericton was deliberately set, the city reports, and police are investigating.

Fredericton firefighters responded to a blaze at the park’s gazebo Tuesday night, the city confirmed Wednesday.

“There were no injuries involved in the blaze. But the gazebo was fully involved with fire when crews arrived on scene, which burned up into the attic,” city spokesperson Elizabeth Fraser wrote in an email to the Fredericton Independent.

“A preliminary investigation has determined the fire was set, and the Fredericton Police Force is investigating.”
