A former Bilijk (Kingsclear) First Nation man recently convicted for a brutal domestic assault denied a bribery charge Tuesday, but a capital-region First Nation chief wasn’t ready for plea on a related allegation.

Welamukotuk (Oromocto) First Nation Chief Shelley Marie Sabattis, 56, appeared in person in Fredericton provincial court Tuesday, scheduled to elect mode of trial and enter pleas on two unconnected criminal prosecutions.

She faces a bribery charge, alleging she tried to get Chanel Sabattis not to testify in a trial against Winton Labelle Walter Saulis, with the intent to obstruct, pervert or defeat the course of justice, between Nov. 23 and 29.
