Detained parolee charged in court
Fredericton police issued alert one week ago about warrant out for Jacob James Phillips, 23
A federal parolee wanted on an allegation of being unlawfully at large has been found and arrested, the Fredericton Police Force said Tuesday morning, and he appeared in court later the same day.
The Fredericton Police Force issued an alert through social media April 22, announcing that Jacob James Phillips, 23, was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for allegedly being unlawfully at large and essentially violating the conditions of his early release from prison.
In a followup Tuesday morning, the force advised that Phillips was in custody.
“He was arrested at a location on Fredericton's north side early [Tuesday] morning,” the followup post, which was posted at 6:30 a.m., stated.
Phillips appeared in Fredericton provincial court Tuesday afternoon by telephone from the city police station cellblock and was charged with being unlawfully at large the same day.
Crown prosecutor Jennifer Bueno objected to his release, and Judge Mélanie Poirier LeBlanc remanded him pending a bail hearing, set for Thursday.
“Am I remanded federally or provincially on that,” Phillips asked, referring to whether he’d been held in prison or a provincial jail.
The judge said that’s up to corrections officials to determine, not the court.
