Virus outbreak shutters Fredericton SPCA
Animal shelter directs community to contact other facilities in province during closure
A Fredericton animal shelter was forced to close its doors for the time being to prevent the spread of a contagious outbreak.
The Fredericton SPCA announced on social media Wednesday afternoon that it’s shutting down for the short term due to an emergency situation.
“... It is with a heavy heart that we must announce that our shelter has a feline virus outbreak,” the organization posted on Facebook on Wednesday.
“Regrettably, we are unable to accommodate any more animals at this time and will be closed until further notice.”
The post didn’t mention the nature of the virus or how many animals are infected.
The Fredericton Independent has contacted the organization for comment and is awaiting a response.
The Fredericton SPCA said anyone requiring its services should contact other shelters in the province.
“However, if you still require our help please be assured that you will be added to a waitlist,” the Facebook post stated.
The organization said its location on Hilton Road in the Vanier Industrial Park is “bursting at the seams” with animals.
It urged anyone considering adopting an animal to check out its website to view those available.
“Your support in adopting these animals is crucial for us to make room for more in need,” the SPCA said on Facebook.
Even those who are unable to adopt an animal can help, it said, by spreading the word about the organization’s situation and the animals looking for a forever home.
