A Welmukotuk (Oromocto) First Nation man accused along with eight others from his community in an alleged instance of vigilantism doesn’t have a lawyer, and evidence will be presented in the case later this month.

Nikia William Sabattis, 41, of First Street, appeared in Fredericton provincial court solo Thursday on a file in which he faces charges along with eight other defendants - all members of his family and residents of the Welmukotuk First Nation.

He and others are jointly charged with two counts of break, enter and assault, stemming from a chaotic incident in the community in which the group allegedly tried to oust Anthony Shane O’Blenis - a non-indigenous man whom the band council wanted out of the First Nation - by force April 29, 2024.
