Used-car fraud case headed to trial
Brent Hayward Stewart, 50, of Doaktown, won’t get preliminary inquiry as requested because prosecution has filed preferred indictment of 27 criminal charges from 2020-2021
A Doaktown man found out this week he’s headed to trial on allegations of fraud at his former used-car sales job without having a preliminary inquiry on 26 fraud counts and one of theft.
Brent Hayward Stewart, 50, of Hazelton Road, appeared in Fredericton provincial court by telephone for a procedural matter.
He’d previously told the court he planned to be represented by defence counsel Daniel Jardine on 27 charges - 26 allegations of fraud and one theft count - but court heard Thursday he still hasn’t retained the Miramichi lawyer.
The charges, laid by the New Brunswick RCMP’s financial crimes unit, allege Stewart defrauded customers of DMR Auto Sales in Pepper Creek on Fredericton’s north side between 2020 and 2021.
