Unhoused man denied bail, pleads guilty
Andrew Derek Washburn, 32, admitted Monday to arson, public masturbation, other crimes
A homeless man with serious mental health issues decided to go it alone at his bail hearing Monday, which ended with him being denied release and pleading guilty to several charges.
Andrew Derek Washburn, 32, of no fixed address, has been in custody for three months but decided last week to request a bail hearing.
He’d also told the court that after rejecting duty-counsel services and refusing to apply for legal aid repeatedly that he’d changed his mind and was planning to seek defence counsel.
Washburn is accused of performing an indecent act by masturbating in public and resisting arrest March 10, and stealing a bike from Savage’s Bicycle Centre, setting a fire at Kings Place while being reckless as to it being occupied and resisting arrest March 30.
