Roundabout reopens after crash
Police had advised motorists to avoid Route 8 at top of Smythe Street after transport truck went off the road and crashed into animal hospital
After hours of the area being closed down due a tractor-trailer crashing into a nearby business Wednesday morning, Fredericton police have reopened the Route 8 roundabout at the top of Smythe Street.
The Fredericton Police Force announced on social media shortly after 6:30 a.m. Wednesday that Route 8 at the roundabout was closed due to a traffic accident.
Photos were shared on Facebook showing a transport truck had crashed into the Fredericton Animal Hospital, which is located in a commercial complex adjacent to the roundabout.
In an update on social media at about 10 a.m., the police force noted no one was injured in the accident, adding the area would continue to be closed to traffic until later in the day to allow accident reconstruction officials to investigate the accident.
Later in the day, police spokesperson Megan Barker said the force wouldn’t be releasing information on the cause of the accident or if charges were expected since the matter remains under investigation.
Shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday, police said on social media the roundabout was once again open to traffic.
The animal hospital also posted an advisory on its Facebook page early Wednesday morning
“Attention all clients: a tractor trailer has crashed into our hospital this morning,” it stated.
“No staff or pets were harmed.”
It noted the business will be closed until further notice due to the extensive damage. It directed anyone in need of care for pets to call the Riverview Animal Hospital at 1-506-387-4015 or the Port City Emergency Vet at 1-506-658-8387.
