Time served for homeless refugee
Abdusalam Zakaria, 51, admitted to assault, disturbance, breach of release conditions
A homeless man who’s been in custody for three months after unusual incidents in uptown Fredericton was a free man again Monday after a court found his remand time was sufficient penalty for his crimes.
Abdusalam Zakaria, 51, of no fixed address, appeared before Fredericton provincial court Judge Natalie LeBlanc on Monday for sentencing.
He previously pleaded guilty to three counts: assault, causing a disturbance and a violation of a release order.
Court heard Zakaria - a homeless Syrian refugee with serious mental-health issues who’s lost his fingers since coming to Canada - was in an unsettled psychological state in late January when he caused problems in a couple of odd incidents in the uptown area of the capital.
