Three dead in accident early Sunday
Fredericton Police Force says it’s still investigating a single-vehicle crash on Douglas Avenue
The driver and two passengers in a vehicle that struck a tree on Fredericton’s north side early Sunday are dead, the city police report, and two other passengers were injured.
The Fredericton Police Force advised on social media early Sunday morning officers were on the scene of an accident on the 700 block of Douglas Avenue, directing people to avoid the scene.
The force then issued a news release Sunday afternoon, reporting three people were killed in a single-vehicle accident at about 1 a.m. that morning..
“The tragic incident claimed the lives of three individuals and sent two others to hospital,” the release said.
“The vehicle in question was believed to have been travelling at a high rate of speed when it struck a tree and landed on another vehicle. The driver and two occupants of the car died at the scene as a result of their injuries.”
There were two other passengers in the vehicle as well, it said, and both were injured - one critically.
The police force indicated the people in the second vehicle on which the first landed sustained minor injuries.
“This is a terrible tragedy, and our most heartfelt condolences go out to the families and friends of the deceased, and those impacted by the accident,” police Chief Martin Gaudet said in the release.
“Our thoughts are also with the first responders who attended the scene.”
Police spokesperson Sonya Gilks told the Fredericton Independent on Sunday afternoon that no charges are expected.
She said officers are meeting with family members of the victims to determine their wishes about the release of names and any further details.
