‘There’s a pattern here’
Fredericton lawyer Stephen James Hill - suspended from practice, accused of misconduct and theft - once again asks for adjournment of sentencing hearing for contempt of court
An embattled Fredericton lawyer sought to postpone his sentencing hearing on a contempt-of-court finding for the second time this year so he can retain counsel - after having hired a lawyer last month.
Stephen James Hill - a Fredericton lawyer currently suspended from practice - was previously found to have overbilled a client, Chelsea Pasch, and was ordered to repay tens of thousands of dollars.
However, as part of a court-managed process to get him to pay and to assess his ability to pay, he failed to disclosure documentation and answer questions by deadlines set by the court.
Pasch’s counsel sought to have Hill found in contempt of court, and Justice Richard Petrie made that finding late last year. The applicant asked the judge to impose a 15-day jail sentence.
