‘The victim was effectively tortured’
Crown seeks 9 years in prison for 43-year-old Fredericton man who brutalized, tormented woman, while defence argues for period of incarceration that would be almost half that
A Fredericton man who held a woman captive for weeks last year, beating, raping and torturing her, is headed to prison, and now it’s up to a judge to determine for how long.
A 43-year-old defendant appeared in Fredericton provincial court by video-conference from a custodial facility for his sentencing hearing Monday.

He pleaded guilty earlier this year, on the day of his scheduled trial, to committing an aggravated assault against a woman, assaulting her with weapons (a belt and a phone), unlawfully confining her, assaulting her by choking, committing additional assaults and uttering threats, all between Jan. 1 and Feb. 9, 2024.
He had also admitted to sexually assaulting the same woman between Nov. 1, 2023, and Feb. 9, 2024.
