Tannery assault now homicide - cops
Fredericton Police Force reports 41-year-old man hurt in downtown incident Sept. 22 succumbed to injuries in hospital Tuesday; major crime unit seeking tips from public
Editor’s note: An earlier version of this report indicated the victim died Tuesday, but that isn’t known. Police learned Tuesday the man died. We regret the error.
A man who was hospitalized after “a serious assault” in Fredericton’s bar district more than a week ago has died, police reported Tuesday, and investigators are now treating the case as a homicide.
The Fredericton Police Force issued advisories through social media Sunday about an incident in the capital’s downtown core the week before.
“The Fredericton Police Force is investigating a serious assault that occurred in the early morning hours of Sept. 22, 2024, in the downtown area at the Tannery,” Sunday’s Facebook post stated.
“Police are looking to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the incident, have information or may have video footage.”

The police force followed up with an additional post Tuesday afternoon, releasing photos of young men believed to be connected to the investigation.
Police spokesperson Sonya Gilks told the Fredericton Independent they were considered “persons of interest” in the case.
She also noted that the alleged assault under investigation saw two men sent to hospital Sept. 22.
“One male was sent to hospital with serious injuries, another one with minor injuries,” Gilks wrote in an email Tuesday. “We are still looking for more witnesses to come forward.”
The case took a dramatic turn later in the day, though, as police published an update advising that the man who’d been more seriously injured in the incident had died.
“Fredericton police are now investigating a serious assault that occurred on Sept. 22, 2024, in the Tannery as a homicide, following new information provided to investigators late [Tuesday] afternoon,”
“The New Brunswick Coroner’s Office has advised that the 41-year-old male who was assaulted has passed away as a result of the injuries sustained.”
Investigators continue to seek witnesses to the Sept. 22 incident, and still want to speak with the persons of interest depicted in the photos.
