Suspect didn’t know he was in standoff - defence
Sentencing hearing held to determine if Vincent John Ryan Currie, 42, was oblivious to Fredericton police demands to surrender himself, or if he was trying to evade arrest
Vincent John Ryan Currie has admitted he was unlawfully at large after violating the terms of his release from prison this summer, but a court still has to figure out if he was clueless to a police presence to arrest him.
Currie, 42, formerly of Fredericton, pleaded guilty earlier this year to a July 4 count of being unlawfully at large, but a judge nevertheless heard testimony recently in the case.
While the offender has admitted to the crime, a sentencing hearing was held earlier this month and continued Wednesday to determine the specific facts of the case as the Crown aims to prove aggravating factors for the court’s consideration.
