Suspect arrested in police operation identified
John Brady Bowes, 30, of Fredericton, was arrested Monday night on charges of breaking into a Woodstock Road residence, failing to attend court
The Fredericton Police Force has identified John Brady Bowes as the suspect officers arrested Monday night in an operation that shut down a downtown neighbourhood for a time.
Bowes, 30, of Brunswick Street, appeared by telephone from the Fredericton police station cellblock Tuesday.
He was charged with June 9 counts of break, enter and theft at a Woodstock Road home, masking his face during that alleged offence, and possession of break-in instruments - namely, a set of bolt cutters.
Bowes also faces a count of failing to attend court in Fredericton on May 17.
Fredericton Police Force spokesperson Megan Barker confirmed Wednesday that Bowes was the individual police arrested after an operation downtown Monday night that shut down an area by the Smythe Street roundabout with Brunswick Street and Woodstock Road.
A significant contingent of city police officers, including members of the emergency response team in full tactical gear, descended on a residence near the roundabout shortly before 9 p.m. Monday.
The police force also deployed its armoured rescue vehicle to the scene.
On Tuesday, Barker issued a news release indicating the situation was one in which officers learned of the location of a wanted suspect in an investigation into a break-in at a southside residence during which an imitation firearm was used.
She said Tuesday the investigation is being conducted in conjunction with the Mounties, as the RCMP has a similar case it’s probing in its area of jurisdiction.
The Crown objected to Bowes’ release in Fredericton provincial court Tuesday, and Judge Mary Jane Richards remanded him pending a bail hearing, scheduled for Thursday.
