State-funded counsel ordered in firearms case
Callum James McGraw, 37, tells court his last lawyer refused to take his charges to trial
A Bilijk (Kingsclear) First Nation man who parted ways with two previous defence lawyers appointed by legal aid successfully argued Friday to get a court to order new state-funded counsel.
Callum James McGraw, 37, of Geegan Street, appeared in Fredericton provincial court Friday by video conference from the Saint John Regional Correctional Centre.
He was before the court Friday for a Rowbotham application, a court proceeding through which unrepresented defendants can apply to a court to order the provincial attorney general to pay for defence counsel. It’s called a Rowbotham application because it’s named for the Supreme Court of Canada case that established the procedure.
