Staples swindler sentenced to cell
Soegiono Liem Swie, 51, hoped to avoid jail time, which would threaten immigration status, but judge ruled there were no exceptional circumstances to merit community-based term
A Fredericton man sought a community-based sentence for fleecing his former employer of tens of thousands of dollars so as to avoid immigration consequences, but a judge imposed jail time anyway.
Soegiono Liem Swie, 51, of Abbott Court, was back before provincial court Judge Scott Brittain on Thursday for his sentencing hearing.
The judge convicted Swie earlier this year after trial of defrauding Staples on Prospect Street of more than tens of thousands of dollars between Dec. 8, 2021, and Nov. 27, 2022, through a bogus-return scheme he perpetrated while working as a manager at the big-box store.
