Stanley shelter-in-place alert lifted
RCMP operation that shut down Giants Glen Road area for hours Wednesday concludes
The lockdown in effect for a part of the Village of Stanley for much of the day Wednesday has ended, as the RCMP reports a police operation in the community has ended.
Minutes before 11 a.m. Wednesday, the RCMP in New Brunswick issued an alert on social media about an ongoing incident in the Village of Stanley, about 40 kilometres north of Fredericton.
“Due to a police operation on Giants Glen Road in Stanley, RCMPNB are asking the public to avoid the area while they do their work,” it said on social media at 10:56 a.m., adding that more information would be shared later.
About a half hour later, the RCMP advised the situation was still ongoing and directed people to remain in their homes.
“Residents of the affected area have been asked to shelter in place,” it said. “Please continue to avoid the area.”
The police force reported the matter, the nature of which it still hadn’t detailed, didn’t meet criteria for the issuance of an emergency Alert Ready message.
It reiterated on social media at 2:10 p.m. Wednesday the operation was still in effect, and it did so again at about 3:30 p.m.
It was just before 6:30 p.m. Wednesday that the Mounties advised the situation was over.
“The police operation on Giants Glen Road in Stanley has concluded, and the shelter in place for the affected area has been lifted,” the RCMP stated on social media.
“Police remain in the area as part of the investigation.”
The force still didn’t provide any information on the nature of the investigation or the “police operation” that was underway throughout the day.
