Standoff suspect continues to defy court, jail officials
Aaron Glen Narvey, 32, of Fredericton, ordered to undergo a psychiatric assessment to determine fitness to stand trial
For his third court appearance in a row Monday, Aaron Glen Narvey continued efforts to stymie the progress of charges laid after a standoff with Fredericton police last week.
Narvey, 32, of no fixed address, was scheduled to appear in Fredericton provincial court in person Monday for a bail hearing.
He was arrested the night of March 8 after a three-hour standoff with Fredericton police officers at a Cliffe Street residence.
As a result, Narvey was charged with several alleged offences from that day: assaulting his mother Shelley Brewer and brother Kristopher Narvey with a weapon (bear spray), unlawfully confining his mom, uttering threats to cause her death and/or bodily harm, and breaching a police undertaking and a probation order.
Narvey was incoherent when he made his first court appearance by telephone from the Fredericton police station Thursday, and when his bail hearing was set over to Friday, he refused to leave his jail cell or speak on the phone that day.
Judge Anne Dugas-Horsman then set the hearing over to Monday and ordered that Narvey be brought to court in person.
But when Judge Lucie Mathurin called the case Monday, court heard correctional officers were unable to handle Narvey, who had refused to leave his cell at the Saint John Regional Correctional Centre for transport to Fredericton.
Furthermore, he refused to appear in court by telephone Monday.
Mathurin ordered a psychiatric assessment to determine if Narvey might be unfit to stand trial or participate in the court process.
She scheduled a fitness hearing for March 20 to review the results of the examination, and she remanded Narvey again until that time.
Narvey had outstanding charges that pre-dated the events of last week as well, and there had been a warrant out for his arrest.
He faces Oct. 13 counts of assault on a police officer with a weapon (a car), flight, dangerous driving, possession of a stolen car and breach of probation; Sept. 25 counts of assault on his mother, property damage and probation violation; a Sept. 14 count of breach of probation; and a Nov. 14 breach of an order to attend court.
