A prosecutor argued Friday a soldier who terrorized a nurse practitioner with a knife should be jailed to send a message that attacks on health-care workers won’t be tolerated.

The first-time offender’s lawyer, though, pushed for a community-based sentence to enable her client to address his mental-health issues.

Master Cpl. Nicholas Mark Paulsen, 28, of Enniskillen Drive in Oromocto, pleaded guilty recently in Fredericton provincial court to March 12 charges of assault with a knife, unlawful confinement and mischief causing damage to property.

He appeared before Judge Natalie LeBlanc on Jan. 24, when she confirmed his guilty pleas after he agreed to the facts of the case.
