Shooting suspect sent for fitness assessment
Darrell Richard Barnes, 51, of Fredericton, says he’d been in Chalmers psych unit for months
A Fredericton man accused of shooting a man in Geary last fall told a court he hadn’t attended court as required last fall because he was admitted to a local psychiatric unit.
Darrell Richard Barnes, 51, of Boyne Court, appeared in person and in custody in Fredericton provincial court Monday, scheduled to go through a bail hearing.
He faces several charges, the most serious of which is an Oct. 3 count of discharging a firearm at Dustin Madden in Geary with intent to wound, maim or disfigure him, or to endanger his life.
Barnes is also accused of related counts of pointing a firearm at Madden, possessing a rifle without a licence and possessing stolen social insurance and Visa cards, as well as a Nov. 23 count of failing to attend court.
