Severe thunderstorm watches in effect for N.B.
Environment and Climate Change Canada issues weather alert throughout New Brunswick
The federal weather service reports that circumstances are converging Thursday afternoon to give rise to “dangerous thunderstorms” throughout New Brunswick.
Environment and Climate Change Canada’s weather service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for most areas of the province as of 2:41 p.m.
“Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and torrential rain,” the advisory stated, noting “multiple rounds” of thunderstorms were possible Thursday.
Intense lightning is likely in any thunderstorm, it said, and tornadoes can be possible as well.
“Heavy downpours can cause water ponding and pooling on roads,” the alert said.
“If you hear thunder, then lightning is close enough to be dangerous.”
The weather service said such severe thunderstorm watches are issued when conditions can lead to storms that could produce large hail, damaging winds and/or torrential rainfall.
