Thunderstorm watch for capital region ends
Federal service warns atmospheric conditions ideal Tuesday for possibly hazardous weather
Fredericton, Oromocto and surrounding communities were under a severe thunderstorm watch Tuesday afternoon, with the federal weather service warning of the chance for dangerous conditions.
“Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and heavy rain,” the alert issued just before 2 p.m. Tuesday by Environment and Climate Change Canada’s weather service stated.
“Thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and this evening; should they become organized, there is some potential for heavy rain and some strong winds.”

However, by early Tuesday, the advisory was lifted for the region.
The thunderstorm watch was in effect for Fredericton and southern York County, Oromocto and Sunbury County, Grand Lake and Queens County, and the Stanley/Doaktown/Blackville area.
The federal weather service issues such severe thunderstorm watches when conditions arise that could give rise to thunderstorms capable of producing large hail, lightning, damaging winds and/or torrential rainfall.
“Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads,” the advisory said.
“Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.”
The severe thunderstorm watch for Fredericton and nearby communities comes on top of the heat warning that’s in effect for most of the province and has been since Friday.
