Robbery suspect made fit after treatment
Judge orders that Abas Suleiman Mohamed, 33, of no fixed address, to be returned to remand facility from psychiatric hospital despite concerns he could deteriorate in jail
An unhoused Fredericton man who’d been found unfit to stand trial earlier this year has since been deemed fit after a period of treatment, and now he’s headed back to jail on remand.
Abas Suleiman Mohamed, 33, of no fixed address, is accused of robbing Elizabeth Namit of a pair of JBL earbuds, breaching a police undertaking requiring him to stay away from the Atlantic Superstore on Smythe Street, and trespassing on the premises of Kings Place in downtown Fredericton, all on Feb. 14.
He’s been in custody since his arrest, and a court previously ordered assessments to determine if he was fit to stand trial.
Those psychiatric examinations led to a finding that he was unfit, meaning he couldn’t instruct counsel and was incapable of understanding the court process.
