Psych exam ordered for Fredericton defendant
Joshua Daniel Grant Burden, 48, faces variety of charges, including break-in at commercial premises, sexual assault and threats
A homeless Fredericton man has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric assessment to see if he’s fit to stand trial on several recent criminal charges.
Joshua Daniel Grant Burden, 48, of no fixed address, appeared in Fredericton provincial court for a bail hearing Monday.
He faces the following charges:
April 19 counts of break, enter and theft at City Auto on Main Street, and theft of a motor vehicle belonging to Nicolas McPhee;
a summary charge of sexual assault against a woman June 6;
and June 7 counts of uttering threats to Eric Lanteigne and Terri-Lynn Stewart to cause them death and/or bodily harm, and violating the condition of a police undertaking barring him from being at the residence or workplace of the sex-assault complainant from the day before.
However, at the conclusion of the bail hearing Monday, Judge Scott Brittain ordered Burden undergo a five-day psychiatric assessment to determine his fitness to stand trial.
That assessment will be conducted at the Saint John Regional Correctional Centre, and the judge remanded Burden to that facility once again.
He’ll be back before the court June 19 to review the results of the examination.
Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story erroneously indicated Burden’s bail hearing didn’t proceed Monday. We regret the error.
