Pro-hockey player busted for driving drunk
Matthew Paul Murphy, 29, of Fredericton, had 3½ times legal limit in his system last year
A professional hockey player from Fredericton had more than three times the legal limit of booze in his system and was abusive to police when investigated last year, court heard Monday.
Matthew Paul Murphy, 29, of Astrid Way, was scheduled to go to trial later this year on an allegation he drove drunk, but he was back in Fredericton provincial court ahead of schedule Monday with defence lawyer Emily Cochrane.
She said the trial wouldn’t be proceeding, as her client had decided to admit to one of the two alternate counts he was facing.
Murphy changed his plea to guilty Monday to a June 1, 2023, charge of having an elevated blood-alcohol level within two hours of driving.
