Prison term sought for 2022 robbery with rifle
Defence seeks shorter stint of incarceration for Jesse Michael Joe, 42, of Fredericton, citing horrendous childhood trauma, including his drug-addicted mother’s attempt to kill him
To decide on a proper prison sentence, a judge must weigh the seriousness of a robbery committed by a Fredericton man with a history of violence with the abuse and crimes visited upon him as a child.
Jesse Michael Joe, 42, formerly of Angelview Court, appeared in person and in custody in Fredericton provincial court Friday for sentencing on a long list of charges.
But the most serious counts - robbery with a rifle and an assault with a two-by-four - stemmed from a shooting incident at the Hanwell Trailer Park on Dec. 2, 2022.
Joe had previously pleaded not guilty to those charges and stood trial before provincial court Judge Lucie Mathurin.
But in the middle of the testimony of victim Daniel Gallant and after conferring with defence lawyer T.J. Burke, Joe opted to change his pleas to guilty to all counts.
