Pre-Halloween snow on the way
Federal weather service calling for early season snowfall in capital region Monday
It looks like tire shops and mechanics are going to get a lot of calls Monday, because meteorologists are calling for an early and substantial snowfall in Fredericton.
The Environment and Climate Change Canada weather service issued a special weather statement for most of New Brunswick shortly before 5 a.m. Sunday, alerting the public that an early snowfall is coming Monday.
“The first accumulating snow of the season will arrive early Monday,” the statement said.
“The snow may mix with or change over to rain in southern and central areas during the afternoon hours. The precipitation will taper off Monday evening.”
The advisory indicated snow accumulations will be greatest in the northern and western regions of the province.
“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate,” it said. “Motorists should be prepared for winter driving conditions.”
The forecast for Fredericton specifies the area will see wet snow mixed with rain Monday afternoon. The snow is expected to amount to two centimetres in the area, but it could be as much as five cm over higher terrain.
The high temperature for Monday is forecast to be 1 C, the federal weather service says, and Monday night should see periods of snow or rain, with a low of -1 C.
