Pothole prevention precautions put in place
Provincial government announces weight restrictions for truck traffic during spring period
The provincial Department of Transportation and Infrastructure announced Friday heavy-truck traffic will be restricted in how much weight they can carry to prevent road damage.
The department said in a news release Friday morning that spring weight restrictions for truck traffic will come into effect at 12:01 a.m. Monday in southern New Brunswick, and at 12:01 a.m. March 11 for northern New Brunswick.
They’ll remain in place, it said, until May 12 for the southern half of the province and until May 19 in the north.
“These weight limits are put in place each spring to protect our road infrastructure from damage during the annual frost-and-thaw cycle,” Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Richard Ames said in the release.
“We provide this notice to the trucking community so they may prepare to reduce their loads or plan for alternate routes during this period.”
The department determines the length of the restriction period by keeping tabs on weather conditions, tracking thaw progress and using sensors located around New Brunswick. As such, it said, the dates provided are subject to change.
The specifics on affected routes and weight calculations can be found here.
