Police warn of parking-lot theft scam
Thieves target shoppers returning to cars by distracting them, says Fredericton Police Force
The Fredericton Police Force warned Friday of a rise in a new scam in the area in which shoppers returning to their vehicles after some shopping are targeted for distraction and thefts.
The city police force issued a warning through social media Friday afternoon about a new theft scheme in which residents are visitors alike are targeted while they’re out shopping.
“In this scam, thieves attach wires to the back of your vehicle or place unusual objects behind your tires while you are parked and inside a store,” the force said in a release.
“When you return, a suspect approaches you, claiming there’s damage or something wrong with your car, and offers to help you inspect it.”
That’s when a partner in the scheme enters into a victim’s vehicle while the first individual distracts them and steals anything of value in plain sight and within reach, such as purses or wallets, police advised.
“If you are approached by someone offering help, stay alert and do not leave your vehicle unattended,” the release said.
The police force urged people to remain vigilant, to keep their vehicles locked at all times and to keep valuables out of sight.
Anyone who sees anything suspicious, or who has fallen victim to such a scam or knows someone who has, is urged to report it to the Fredericton Police Force by calling 506-460-2300.
