Police probe fatal motorcycle crash
Morning accident on Fredericton’s north side forced closure of Canada Street for hours as first responders dealt with aftermath; second victim seriously injured, taken to hospital
One person is dead and another seriously injured after a motorcycle crash Friday morning that shut down a key artery through Fredericton’s north side for hours.
Fredericton Police Force spokesperson Sonya Gilks said police, firefighters and paramedics were dispatched to the scene of an accident Friday morning.
“The call came in at 8:18 a.m.,” she wrote in an email to the Fredericton Independent.
She confirmed one rider on the bike died at the scene.
The other was an adult male who sustained “critical injuries” and was taken to hospital, Gilks said.
Officers with the force’s patrols division and accident reconstruction team were still on the scene on Canada Street throughout the morning and into the lunch hour Friday, she said.
She also reported that a representative with the provincial coroner’s office attended the site of the crash as well Friday morning.
The incident forced the closure of Canada Street for several hours Friday morning, with traffic being redirected to side streets to circumvent the scene.
Gilks reported after 1 p.m. that police had cleared the scene and traffic through the area was flowing normally again.
It still isn’t clear if the crash was a single-vehicle accident involving only the motorcycle or if there might have been a collision with another vehicle, and the Fredericton Independent is awaiting word from officials on that aspect.
There also hasn’t been any word thus far if any charges are expected as a result of the crash and fatality.
