Police enact new policies after intel leak
Discovery that drug suspect saw protected documents after he came into possession of officer’s discarded home computer in 2023 prompts new rules regarding digital access
A routine practice of Fredericton police officers accessing sensitive information on personal devices that led to a drug suspect getting his hands on sensitive intelligence has prompted change at the city police force.
In a report issued Monday, the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT), the watchdog agency that investigates possible criminal conduct by police officers in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, found there was no criminal offence arising from the leaking of protected information from a Fredericton police officer’s home computer in 2023.
The officer’s discarded Apple computer ended up in the possession of a suspect in a drug investigation, and photos of sensitive police intelligence, displayed on the unnamed officer’s computer, were found on a cellphone seized from the suspect’s residence in 2023, the report said.
