One robbery suspect released, other one held
Jacob Gautreau, 25, of Fredericton, is out on conditions after his bail hearing, while co-accused Gabriel Green, 33, of Oromocto was denied bail
Two men accused of the same violent home invasion and robbery saw opposite outcomes from their bail hearings Thursday, with one sprung on an ankle monitor while the other was remanded.
Jacob Gautreau, 25, of Canterbury Drive in Fredericton; and Gabriel Green, 33, of Hiawatha Court in Oromocto; were remanded in Fredericton provincial court pending their bail hearings earlier this week.
The pair is charged with breaking into the Welomukotuk (Oromocto) First Nation home of Mitchell Vienneau-Polchies on Sunday, attempting to rob him of cash while armed with weapons, and assaulting him with those weapons.
Gautreau is alleged to have been armed with a knife, while Green’s charges refer to him having a crowbar.
Both had bail hearings before provincial court Judge Mary Jane Richards on Thursday.
The evidence presented at both hearings is subject to a ban on publication until the cases conclude, as are the reasons the judge gave for her decisions.
Richards ruled Gautreau could be released on strict conditions.
Those include subjecting himself to electronic ankle monitoring 24 hours per day, residing at his parents’ Currie Crescent home in Waasis, remaining there until his monitoring supervisor grants an absence, allowing compliance checks at the home, staying away from the Welomukotuk (Oromocto) First Nation, and having no contact with Green and Vienneau-Polchies.
Conversely, the judge denied Green’s bid for release, remanding him pending the outcome of the charges.
Richards set both cases over to May 11 for election of mode of trial.
