A judge ruled Thursday that a federal prisoner’s assertion he was oblivious to police commands to surrender on Fredericton’s north side this summer was outside the realm of possibility.

Vincent John Ryan Currie, 42, formerly of Fredericton, appeared in custody and in person in Fredericton provincial court for Judge Natalie LeBlanc’s decision on a sentencing hearing that was held last month.

Currie had previously pleaded guilty to a July 4 count of being unlawfully at large in violation of a federal prison sentence, but he denied additional facts the prosecution alleged to be aggravating factors to be considered in arriving at a proper sentence.

The offender was arrested the evening of July 4 at an Oak Avenue home on the capital’s north side on an outstanding federal warrant, but that came after a standoff that lasted for hours, beginning at the lunch hour.
