‘Nobody gives a shit anymore’
Family members of Minto couple whom Gregory Allan Despres, 42, killed two decades ago say Crown’s office, victim services, are letting them down, failing to communicate with them
Sandra Martin says her mother’s violent death at the hands of a mentally ill killer 20 years ago still haunts her, but she fears the justice system is trying to forget it ever happened.
Martin is the daughter of Veronica (“Verna”) DeCarie, whom Gregory Allan Despres, 42, killed along with her partner, Fred Fulton, in their Minto home the night of April 23, 2005.
Despres, then 22, lived in a shack next to the elderly couple’s home on Slope Road in Minto, and he broke in, stabbing them repeatedly. He also decapitated Fulton with a homemade sword.
Fulton’s daughter found the bodies the morning of April 26, 2005.
The killer was ultimately deemed to be not criminally responsible for the murders in 2008 by reason of mental illness - schizoaffective disorder - at the time of the crimes.
