Mounties being investigated after suspect injured
New Brunswick RCMP has requested the Nova Scotia Serious Incident Response Team to look into what happened with an arrest in Lincoln on Monday
The regional agency that investigates police actions has been called into the Fredericton area to probe an arrest Monday during which a suspect was injured.
The New Brunswick RCMP issued a news release Tuesday afternoon reporting that it requested the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) based in Nova Scotia to investigate officer actions during an arrest during which a male suspect was alleged to have been injured.
“On May 1, 2023, at approximately 8 a.m., members of the Oromocto RCMP detachment attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle in the Waasis area. The vehicle was known to police, and the driver failed to stop,” the release said.
“Police later observed the vehicle parked outside of a residence on Garden Grove Street in Lincoln, and attempted to arrest the driver who then fled on foot into a wooded area.”
An RCMP canine unit was brought in and located the suspect, the release said.
That suspect “sustained minor injuries during the arrest and was taken to hospital for medical treatment,” the release said.
The man was treated and released from the hospital, and has since been remanded into custody, the RCMP reported.
“Following further review of the events, the New Brunswick RCMP has referred the incident to the Nova Scotia SiRT for an independent investigation,” the release said.
“The investigation is continuing.”
