Mountie charged with aggravated assault
Serious incident Response Team alleges RCMP Cpl. Andrew Whiteway committed violent offence against female suspect during course of arrest in Richmond Corner in June
The regional police watchdog that investigates allegations of criminal conduct by police officers has charged a Mountie with a serious assault, alleged to have occurred during an arrest.
The Nova Scotia/New Brunswick Serious incident Response Team (SiRT) - which investigates police-involved matters that result in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or intimate partner violence - issued a news release Monday morning, announcing that RCMP Cpl. Andrew Whiteway is accused of aggravated assault on a female complainant.
“The SiRT received a referral regarding a female who was struck in the face in the course of an arrest on June 13, 2024, in Richmond Corner, New Brunswick,” the release said.
Richmond Corner is just a few kilometres west of Woodstock, or about 100 kilometres west of Fredericton.
The agency launched an investigation, it said, and consequently, the team laid a charge of aggravated assault against the RCMP officer.
Whiteway is scheduled to appear in Woodstock provincial court for his first appearance on the charge Oct. 2.
