Minor has no counsel in school-assault lawsuit
Parents of teenager being sued along with district education council over allegations of anti-Semitic violence argue they can’t afford to pay for her lawyer on top of their own
The parents of a Leo Hayes High School student named in a lawsuit by a Jewish classmate claim they can’t afford to pay for her legal representation, and their lawyer wants the plaintiffs to pay for it.
A Muslim girl who attends the school on Fredericton’s north side is named as a defendant along with her parents, Anglophone West district education council (DEC) and an unknown man.
The plaintiffs are a Jewish student at the school and her father, who’s acting as her litigation guardian.
The lawsuit claims the Muslim student assaulted the Jewish girl twice April 30 - once in the school and again off school grounds - and that her actions were motivated by anti-Semitism.
None of the allegations in the statement of claim has been proven in court.
