March standoff perp pleads guilty
Aaron Glen Narvey, 32, of Fredericton, deemed criminally responsible for his actions after latest psych exam, admits to various offences, including assaults on mom, brother
A Fredericton man who assaulted his mother twice and tried to run down a city police officer with a vehicle will be sentenced this fall after admitting to those and numerous other crimes.
Aaron Glen Narvey, 32, of no fixed address, was back before Fredericton provincial court July 20 for a hearing on a recent psychiatric assessment.
Last month, a judge had ordered the assessment at the Restigouche Hospital Centre - a secure psychiatric facility in Campbellton - to determine if Narvey might be exempt from criminal responsibility due to a mental disorder at the time he committed various offences.
However, the report filed with the court last week found Narvey wasn’t exempt from criminal responsibility.
After accepting that finding, Narvey pleaded guilty to the long list of charges he was facing.
He admitted to assaulting his mother Shelley Brewer and brother Kristopher Narvey with a weapon (bear spray), unlawfully confining his mother, uttering threats to cause her death and/or bodily harm, and breaching a police undertaking and a probation order, all on March 8.
He also pleaded guilty to Oct. 13 counts of assault on a police officer with a weapon (a car), flight from police, dangerous driving, possession of a stolen car and breach of probation; another assault on his mother, property damage and probation violation committed Sept. 25; as well as a Sept. 14 breach of probation and a failure to attend court Nov. 14.
Judge Scott Brittain ordered the preparation of a pre-sentence report and victim-impact statements, and scheduled Narvey’s sentencing for Oct. 3.
Narvey had previously undergone a psychiatric assessment to determine his fitness to stand trial, and a forensic psychiatrist found him fit.
The offender was arrested after a three-hour standoff with Fredericton police officers at a Cliffe Street residence the night of March 8, the same day he’d bear-sprayed his mother and brother, and he’s remained in custody since that time.
