Man killed after being shot along roadside in Lincoln
RCMP advises its major crime unit is investigating the incident as a homicide; no mention made of arrests or suspects
The RCMP's major crime unit has deemed that a fatal shooting just outside Fredericton is suspicious and noted its being investigated as a homicide.
The New Brunswick RCMP issued a news release Sunday afternoon that numerous Mounties as well as ambulance personnel responded to a report of a gun discharge at about 4:10 a.m. Sunday the 2300 block on Route 102 in Lincoln, located about 10 kilometres southeast of Fredericton.
“When police arrived on the scene, it was confirmed that a 27-year-old man was injured due to a gunshot wound and was transported to hospital with what were believed to be serious, life-threatening injuries,” the release said.
“The man has since died in hospital as a result of his injuries.”
RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Dan Sharpe said the incident is being treated as a homicide and officers with the RCMP’s major crime unit are investigating it accordingly.
"This is also believed to be an isolated incident,” Sharpe said in the release.
The Mounties made no mention of any arrest or specific suspects in the release, and the force appealed to the public for tips to aid in the investigation.
It asked anyone who witnessed the incident, has information about it or may have captured video footage in the area between 2 and 5 a.m. Sunday to contact the major crime unit at 1-888-506-RCMP (7267).
Tipsters can also provide information anonymously through Crime Stoppers by phone at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), by downloading its secure P3 Mobile App or online by Secure Web Tips at www.crimenb.ca, the release said.
The RCMP didn’t issue an Alert Ready message, a telecommunications tool that sends emergency messages to people’s cellphones within a prescribed area.
“The situation did not meet the criteria to issue an Alert Ready message,” the release said, noting the Mounties are ready to issue such alerts if there is an immediate risk to public safety or some other immediate need.
The RCMP in Nova Scotia came under criticism for failing to use the Alert Ready system during the Portapique shootings in April 2020, when a gunman was still at large.
