Little bit of everything tonight, weather-wise
Wet weather expected to give way to freezing rain, ice pellets and snow Wednesday night into Thursday, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada’s weather service
If you don’t know what your favourite or most detested kind of precipitation is, Mother Nature is going to let you experience just about every kind Wednesday night, according to the federal weather service.
Environment and Climate Change Canada’s weather service issued a special weather statement early Wednesday, advising of an incoming system that could make for sketchy driving conditions and give rise to power outages.
“Mild and wet conditions turn into freezing rain, ice pellets, and then snow,” the statement said, noting that weather is expected for most of southern New Brunswick, including the Fredericton region.
Rainfall is forecast to total between 15 to 25 millimetres, though the weather service noted it could be as much as 30 mm in Kings County, where the Town of Sussex experienced significant flooding just days ago.
Combined accumulation of snow and ice pellets could be as much as 15 centimetres or more, Environment and Climate Change Canada reported, with maximum wind gusts of 50 kilometres per hour.
“Rain will change to a mix of freezing rain and ice pellets late overnight or Thursday morning. The precipitation is expected to change to snow later on Thursday over all areas before ending late afternoon or in the evening,” the weather statement said.
“At this time, significant uncertainty remains regarding the exact amount of freezing rain versus ice pellets. The most likely area to receive a significant period of freezing rain is southeastern New Brunswick.”
The weather service indicated that in the past, similar weather has resulted in hazardous driving conditions, traffic issues and some power outages.
