Leo Hayes assault case to be resolved
16-year-old girl charged with assaulting Jewish student at high school appears in court
A girl involved in a controversial confrontation at a Fredericton school that spawned a lawsuit alleging anti-Semitism at the institution appeared in youth court Wednesday on a charge of assault.
A 16-year-old Fredericton-area girl - whose identity is protected by the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act - appeared in Fredericton youth court Wednesday afternoon to answer to summary charges of assault and uttering threats.
The April 30 counts, laid by the Fredericton Police Force, alleges an attack at Leo Hayes High School by the defendant on another student, a Jewish girl, whose identity is also protected by the same legislation.
The accused is of Muslim heritage, and the complainant in the case and her father went public about the incident, alleging a hate-based assault because she’s Jewish.
